So, a little bit about me and where I'm coming from. I'm 24 and live in good ole Indianapolis- I love the Circle City- so don't hate. I have a mild form of Muscular Dystrophy that mainly causes me slight pain, poor balance, fatigue and falls when walking too far, and weak hands and feet. This isn't me complaining- just stating the facts because quite a few of my fat girl struggles also come from me being a crippled girl too. I've always been a bigger girl, but my last year of college and first year post college caused me to gain a considerable amount of weight. I started college in 2011 weighting about 170lbs. At my highest when I started this weight loss journey at the end of 2015, I was about 245lbs. I am only 5'2", so according to those fancy dancy BMI calculators, I should weigh about 130lbs to be a 'healthy' weight. I know there is no way in hell I'll ever weight that much, nor do I ever wish to weight that much. I'm a big girl, always have been, always will be. I love the way I look and think I'm beautiful- yes there are small things about my body I don't like, that's just how life works. I do want to be healthier and be able to enjoy my life, which is why I started my journey.
Exactly one year ago today, I started my journey. I was 245lbs, uncomfortable, and unable to do many of the things I wanted to do. So, I decided I was going to make a change, starting with watching my food intake. Let me tell you what- for someone who loves loves loves carbs and sugars, cutting down to 1400 calories a day sucked. It took me about 3 weeks for my anger from lack of fettuccine alfredo to settle down, but by one month in, I had lost 5lbs! For someone who had NEVER lost weight before that was amazing.
My now fiance decided he too wanted to lose some weight to feel better. I can guarantee you this is the only reason I stuck with my commitment to better health for the last year. We found better recipes for our favorites- mac and cheese, chicken fingers, pizza, and even my fav fettuccine alfredo- I'll share some of my favorite food options in another post!
Over the past year I've had a few injuries- which is totally common for me. What is uncommon for me is how quickly I was able to bounce back from my injuries. I was able to get back to normal much faster, because I've shed some weight and my body is used to being active. This year I've fractured my foot and dislocate my knee cap. Even though I've had those injuries, I'm still in the groove of eating better and exercising.
Now onto my job- I'm a commercial insurance underwriter- and probably none of you know what that means. And of those of you who know what that means, you have no idea how stressful of a job it is unless you've done it. I work at a desk. For 9+ hours everyday. And I rarely get up from that desk. And its super stressful. Wanna tell me how hard it is to lose weight sitting down and stress eating all day? I can tell you- its darn near impossible. But, I've stocked my desk with healthy snacks- low fat granola bars, almonds, and bring fresh veggies most days. GUM. Gum is my savior, I chew it all day to keep myself from grabbing M&Ms all day long.
So, for the results. I now weigh 215lbs. meaning I've lost 30lbs in the past year. My fiance has lost 50lbs in the past year, but I'm not going to get into how unfair it is to woman and how much easier it is for men to lose weight (because its soooooooooooo much easier).
I know 30lbs isn't that magic number people see and are like "wow, I wonder how this girl lost 100lbs in a year, I need to do what she's doing". 30lbs is the healthy amount of weight for someone to lose in a year. Gradual weight loss and formation of healthy habits is what keeps the weight off. How many of those biggest loser people have gained back all their weight and then some? Too many to count.
Yes, I fall off the wagon, but I keep getting back on it. And as a fat crippled girl, I know just how hard it is to climb back on that wagon. I know I'm not eating exactly how I should be, because healthy food is disgusting and I love carbs and sugar (hello fettuccine alfredo). I know I'm not doing the right kind of exercise for maximum weight loss- burpees? No thanks! I am however, doing what I think is best for me and slowly changing my habits to be healthier.
